Chronic bunion pain often evolves beyond a mere physical issue; it transforms into an energetic imbalance. As time passes, the discomfort is no longer tied to a misaligned big toe or past foot injuries. Instead, it becomes intertwined with the lower vibrations of our core emotions. Something feels off internally, a subtle disharmony that we can't quite identify because we've never been taught to link our life experiences with our physical bodies. However, there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Masterful teachers are emerging within the holistic health realm, their voices now being heard as we begin to truly listen.
Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life highlights mental thoughts and how they form physical experiences. Our Emotional Pain Chart illustrates this concept with great clarity! In her book, bunions are represented by the lack of joy in meeting life experiences. We unknowingly replace our need to feel and connect with our core emotions with pain, which unquestionably makes me think that tightness within our body is just an accumulation of attitudes. Our mind really does have a considerable impact on our human frame. The disconnection from core emotions definitely hurts us.
As a physical and energetic therapist, my role as a body detective involves conducting a light examination of the musculoskeletal system paired with a comprehensive spiritual analysis. I collect information through various cues such as the tone of a person's voice, their natural postural habits, and their outlook on life. I pay close attention to how they narrate their life story, the significant individuals involved, and their interactions within relationships. I seek to understand the reasons behind their protective behaviors or lack thereof. My focus extends to their self-confidence, self-worth, and overall appreciation for life. Are they connected to their emotions, yes or no? If not, why? Are they overly emotional for a particular reason? I view legs as a symbol of power, and I consider how this person may have lost connection to their strength—what happened?
My aim is to help them realign with their true life path.
By the time I evaluate the longstanding bunion pain, the client often has limited mobility and reduced use of the foot. This condition affects their daily life and takes a toll on their sense of freedom. The heaviness of the foot breeds sadness, and flickers of frustration and depression typically enter their mind. The body’s intellectual form is searching for understanding, lessons, and purpose through dormant emotions. Each step causes pain unless they stop to self-examine. This frustration arises from not connecting with what is important in life and continuing to move forward without consciously considering what truly makes them happy.
In Chinese medicine, the liver meridian runs through the big toe, representing anger that needs to be released from the body. The spiritual meaning of bunion pain may also relate to feeling stuck or unable to move forward in life, symbolizing a blockage in one's path or purpose. If we don't connect with the anger, it can turn into worry and overthinking due to the life we're missing out on. An emotion often related to the big toe is worry. We experience worry and overthinking all the time—worry about a parent, worry about our true selves, or regret that we aren't living the lives we dream of. Perhaps we become bitter because we can't find the courage to live the way we envision.
Our big toe connects us to the arch and the inner line of the leg, to the transverse abdominis, the most powerful engagement in the core, co-contracting with deep posterior paraspinal muscles to support our spine and our life. When I have my patients balance on one foot, I notice who is standing on the outside of their foot and who is collapsing inward. People who tend to fall outward are significantly staying away from their true selves and how they feel deeply inside. Others collapse inward, giving away all their power and not standing up for themselves and the truths they may not even be conscious of at the time. When balance is achieved, a person can find it easier to connect to their core muscles and feel their inner power in a way they never have before.
My initial treatment typically begins on the table where I work on the foot, calves, and hamstrings from a physical perspective using joint and soft tissue mobilization. I’m searching for a pain-free movement pattern—a motion that contracts the muscles and moves the joint without triggering pain signals to the brain. This allows the person to experience a sense of hope and assurance that they can move again without pain. I usually have them roll their feet on a tennis ball to connect with the pain and what it could be representing. I encourage reframing the thought into a positive manner and releasing the emotion. As we move through that clear range of motion, the client can reconnect with themselves, begin to engage in activities that bring them joy, and start to resolve the drain on their spirit.
And this is where I begin my energetic treatment. I assist in cutting cords that they’ve been tethered to, whether it’s people or things in their lives that no longer serve a purpose. The body craves this type of healing because the emotional experiences, which have been suppressed, surface to release the pain. This process illuminates the soul, leaving an indelible imprint that renews the heart with love and passion for life, ultimately finding health in your soul.
Whether I work with someone in person or virtually, we will review your health history and explore underlying meanings and connections from generational patterns to life experiences. Typically, when we make the connection to the emotion and bring it to your consciousness, the body has a beautiful way of releasing it, allowing physical modalities to work more effectively and heal the pain. Message me for a consultation.
It’s time to connect with your inner self, release the pain and enjoy life.
